To Grandmother’s House We Go

When traveling with your baby it's all about preparation.

You remember how the song goes, "Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go..."

Whether or not you'll be traveling to grandmother's house this holiday, chances are you'll be bringing baby to see her one day. With that in mind, it can be hard to know what baby gear to bring with you and what to ask grandma to have on hand.

Of course, there are several things that have to be taken into consideration:

  • Are you traveling by road or air?
  • How long will you be staying?
  • What is baby used to?
  • Is there a neighbor nearby with a baby you can lean on to borrow from?

Traveling with baby is not always simple, but we're here to help make it easier by helping you think through the following factors:

Preparing to Travel With Baby

Preparation is key to traveling with your baby. Certain things have to happen before your trip.

One of the best things to do before you go is to make a baby travel checklist. Having a checklist will help make sure you don't forget anything, which is easy to do when you're trying to pack for yourself and your family.

What to Bring to Grandmother's House

Every baby is going to need a few basic essentials and baby travel gear, no matter where your travels take you. Here are a few of the essentials:

  • diapers
  • wipes
  • shampoo
  • baby toothbrush
  • diaper rash cream
  • clothes
  • onesies
  • diaper bag for mom
  • baby travel crib

Other baby travel gear that is helpful but not necessary includes:

  • portable high chair
  • baby travel system
  • baby travel swing
  • snuggle toys
  • nightlight
  • sound machine
  • car seat toys
  • car seat cover (if traveling on a plane)

Baby Travel Gear

Once you start to compile your travel gear checklist, you'll want to ask a few more questions about whether an item is necessary or not. Below are some additional thoughts, as well as some of our favorite items for when you travel with baby.

Travel Crib

The baby travel crib is necessary, but parents take different stances on this one. While this could easily be borrowed, sometimes you don't know what you're getting (i.e. does the person you're borrowing from have pets? Has a baby been sick in the crib previously?). Therefore, we strongly suggest Grandma purchasing to have on hand at her house if you plan to travel there more than once.

Go Guardian Sleep N Play by Fisher Price by Hauck is a great option for a travel crib. It's compact and is perfect for any trip. The crib fits children up to 33 pounds and comes with a travel bag for easy transport.

Portable Baby High Chair

A portable high chair is a valuable piece of baby gear to carry with you. The 360 Hook On Chair by Chicco gives you peace of mind when you are traveling.

This keeps baby from having to keep baby on your lap at the dinner table at grandmother's house. It can even be taken to a restaurant if you want to eat out and aren't sure what's available for baby at the restaurant.

Diaper Bag

Let's face it: every mom needs a great diaper bag every day, not just when traveling. The Vegan Leather Wherever Weekender by Ju-Ju-Be is both a functional and stylish diaper bag. If you want to splurge to make your next trip memorable, this bag is for you.

Sound Machine and Night Light

A sound machine or nightlight is not essential when packing for baby, but it's a great option to bring on your next trip. When you're away from home, having the soothing lullabies and lights can help calm your baby down at bedtime. The Moonlight & Melodies Nightlight Soother is a wonderful option, offering both soothing lights and sounds in the same machine.

Car Seat and Stroller Toys

Sitting in a car seat or stroller can be boring for your baby, so it's important to bring along toys to keep your little munchkin happy and occupied. The Bandana Buddies Activity Toy by Skip Hop is a perfect option for any baby. The multi-use toy attaches to your cart seat or stroller and provides lots of ways to distract your child during the long hours of travel.

Travel Booster Seat

If you're traveling with an older child, the Bubble Bum travel booster seat will be your new best friend. Not only is it easily inflatable once you arrive at your destination, the slim profile allows you to fit more family in the back seat.

So, no matter where your next trip takes you, hopefully now you feel more prepared. And if Grandma needs some shopping suggestions for when you bring baby for a visit, consider sharing this post with her!
